Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS)

Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) acts as a bridge between schools and immigrant families. SWIS supports newcomer students and their families as they adjust to their school and community.  SWIS offers guidance based on individual needs of the family.

SWIS services include but are not limited to;

  • Identifying settlement goals
  • Providing information and referrals that align with goals
  • Referring and connecting to community resources
  • Supporting clients in their settlement journey
  • Consultation with school staff on settlement and cultural issues
  • Children and Youth Group events

Community Connections

Under our Community Connections program we facilitate a range of group sessions and workshops aimed at introducing newcomer clients to welcoming, safe and inclusive spaces, connecting clients with other newcomers and volunteers in the community, building newcomer support networks and promoting outreach and awareness.

Canada Connects

Canada Connects matches established Canadian immigrants with newcomers within North Bay and area. With virtual, telephone and in-person opportunities our program can fulfill your social settlement needs. We facilitate connections and encourage the supportive friendships that can emerge and are beneficial to everyone involved.

Canada Connects provides;

  • Opportunities for informal language skills practice;
  • Information and orientation to the area in conjunction with Settlement Workers;
  • Community exploration opportunities;
  • Volunteer opportunities for informal studying and reading supports;

Library Settlement Partnership Services (LSP)

English and French Language Supports

Are you looking for an informal way to practice English or French in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere? We offer regular English and French Conversation Circles that provide the opportunity to practice your speaking and listening skills, meet other newcomers and enjoy refreshments together.

We facilitate language assessments for placement in local federal and provincial formal language classes.

 

Translation and Interpretation Services

We offer translation services on a fee for service basis. If you require a document to be translated, give us a call or stop by and we will get the job done for you.

We can connect community partners with professional interpreter services (fee based).

Skilled Newcomer Career Loan (North Bay only)

Our settlement staff assists eligible newcomer clients with applications for this loan. The Skilled Newcomer Career Loan is designed to help skilled newcomers living in the Nipissing district upgrade their credentials so they can get back to work in their field while living in Ontario.
